Metal Roofing in Tulsa and Oklahoma City

Black Crown Construction installs residential metal roofs across the Tulsa metro and Oklahoma City. Metal suits Oklahoma's hail and heat when the panel type, rating and fastening match the house. This page covers the choices that matter most before you compare estimates.

    Standing seam or exposed fastener?

IBHS's metal roofing guide describes the two main approaches. Exposed (through-fastened) panels seal each screw with a washer or gasket. Standing seam systems use concealed fasteners that attach to the structural support and let the panels move with thermal expansion and contraction. The same guide notes that steel in 24 to 26 gauge is the most commonly used metal roofing material.

    How metal handles Oklahoma hail

The FORTIFIED Hail Supplement calls for metal panels rated UL 2218 Class 4, which means the product was still functional after being struck twice in the same spot by 2-inch steel balls. The same document cautions that impact-resistant metal can still show permanent dents. A Class 4 rating is about keeping water out, not about looks.

    Heat, movement and oil canning

IBHS weathering research notes that sunshine can push roof temperatures over 200°F and that a roof's temperature can swing 80 to 90°F in a day. That daily movement is why fastening and panel design matter on metal. The Metal Construction Association explains that oil canning, a visible waviness in flat panel areas, cannot be fully prevented by any manufacturer or installer, though material, design and installation choices can reduce it.

Can metal go over existing shingles?

Oklahoma's adopted 2024 code says complete and separate roofing systems, such as standing-seam metal roof systems designed to carry roof loads directly to the building's structure, do not require removing existing roof coverings. Whether a particular system qualifies on your house depends on the product's instructions and your city's permit office.

    Comparing cool metal roofs

ENERGY STAR stopped rating roofing products on June 1, 2022. To compare how well a metal finish reflects heat, use the solar reflectance and thermal emittance values in the Cool Roof Rating Council's rated products directory.

    Frequently asked questions

Does hail dent a metal roof?

It can. A UL 2218 Class 4 metal panel is meant to stay functional after severe impacts, but the FORTIFIED Hail Supplement notes that hail can still leave permanent cosmetic dents.

Can a metal roof go over shingles in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma's 2024 code lets complete and separate systems, such as standing-seam metal that carries roof loads to the structure, go on without removing existing coverings. Confirm with your city permit office and the product's instructions.

What does UL 2218 Class 4 mean?

It is the highest class in the UL 2218 impact test: the product was still functional after two hits in the same spot from a 2-inch steel ball.

Is standing seam better than exposed-fastener metal?

They work differently. Exposed-fastener panels seal each screw with a washer, while standing seam hides its fasteners and lets panels move with temperature changes. Your estimate should explain which system is proposed and why.
